Midfielder signs one-year deal

Euro 2008 winner Marcos Senna has penned a new one-year contract extension at Villarreal. The midfielder has seen his future called into question of late, but has brought an end to those rumours by signing a new deal. The Brazil-born star will now remain with his current Spanish employers until at least 2011. The 32-year-old has played over 150 games for the Yellow Submarines since joining from Sao Caetano six years ago and was a key member of Spain's European Championship winning side.

Central figure

"Marcos is and will continue to be an important player in our team," said club president Fernando Roig. "He's central to Villarreal's next phase and wants to play here." Villarreal are preparing for life back in the UEFA Champions League this season, and Senna insists he never planned on playing anywhere else. "I always said I wanted to continue with Villarreal and I am happy with this extension," he said.
