Atletico Madrid have signed Juanito on a free transfer following his exit from Real Betis.
Defender signs two-year contract
Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Juanito on a free transfer after he allowed his contract with Real Betis to expire.
The Spain international had spent virtually all of his professional career with Betis, who suffered relegation at the end of the 2008/9 campaign.
He has now joined Atletico on a two-year contract and will be looking to help the club challenge for honours during that period.
Despite qualifying for the Champions League play-off round with a fourth-placed finish in the Primera Division, Atletico's defence was regarded as something of a weakness and Juanito's arrival will be seen as a significant boost.
"Juan Gutierrez Moreno, known more commonly as Juanito, has signed for Atletico de Madrid for the next two seasons," read a statement on the club's official website.
"After leaving Real Betis, he joins the Rojiblanca on a free transfer, after his contract with the Verdiblanco had run out on June 30,2009.
"The international central defender was born in Cadiz on July 23, 1976, and he has spent almost his entire career playing for Betis, where he was the captain of the first team.
"Juanito will be presented as a new Rojiblanco player soon."
