Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti has insisted that star striker Diego Milito will not be leaving the club this summer.
Milito has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom this season, culminating in scoring two brilliantly taken goals to win the UEFA Champions League final for his side as well as the Serie A title and Coppa Italia.
The 30-year-old has now been linked with Real Madrid, where he would join up with Jose Mourinho, who delivered the unprecedented success last season for Inter and mentored Milito's success before moving to the Bernabeu on Sunday.
Milito now has the chance to impress potential buyers further as he travels to the the World Cup with Diego Maradona's Argentina squad, where he could demonstrate his brilliant goalscoring talent alongside Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi in attack.
Zanetti, who failed to make the final cut in Maradona's section, condemned the speculation, stating that Milito has no intention of leaving Inter, despite sending mixed message following his heroics in Madrid where his brace secured a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich.
Delighted
"I spoke to Diego after the match and it seems he didn't express himself right," Zanetti told the club's
official TV channel.
"He's delighted to be with us and I believe what we saw this year was important.
"He has also become a part of Inter's history, no about that, he'll stay with us.
The 37-year-old veteran became Inter's first skipper to lift the European trophy since 1965, but revealed that he could have been a Real Madrid player several years ago before being persuaded to stay with the club he joined 15 years ago.
"I've already turned Real Madrid down once a few years ago," he added,
"I could have gone there, it was almost a done deal, but I spoke to (Inter president Massimo) Moratti and told him I wanted to stay here."
