Anquela set to bring his Midas touch to the Primera Liga next term

Granada have announced Juan Antonio Anquela has been appointed boss of the Primera Liga side on a two-year contract. The 54-year-old is viewed as one of Spanish football's leading managerial prospects after he guided Alcorcon out of the third tier and to the verge of the top flight. Granada escaped relegation on the final day of the last season under the guidance of coach Abel Resino, but he walked away from the post a fortnight ago, having been in the job for just five months. Anquela was first approached about the Granada job by president Quique Pina in January, having been impressed with his work in the lower divisions. Despite being flattered by the interest, Anquela opted to remain where he was and complete the season. Anquela shot to prominence after Alcorcon claimed a remarkable 4-1 aggregate win in the Copa del Rey over Real Madrid in the 2009/10 season. Two seasons ago Alcorcon were promoted to Segunda B for the first time in their history and finished in mid-table, and in the term just ended, they reached the play-offs.
