La Liga story so far: The best stats of the Spanish season

It has been a dramatic season already in La Liga and the title race is very much on as we pass the halfway stage.

Real Madrid hit the top early but surprise package Sevilla are level on points with second-placed Barcelona, while Atletico Madrid are trailing in fourth. But expect plenty more twists and turns before it is over.

Madrid's record-breaking unbeaten run came to an end at Sevilla before they were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Celta Vigo.

Suddenly, there were questions for Zinedine Zidane. How will he respond in adversity? And were Madrid really as dominant as we thought they were? Their 3-0 win over Real Socieded suggests they are back on track.

With 51 goals Real - who have a game in hand on their rivals - have scored more goals per game than any other team in the division.

For Barcelona - who grabbed a last-gasp draw at Betis on Sunday - this still feels like the end of the cycle under Luis Enrique.

The problem? Well, for one, they have made twice as many errors leading to goals as any of their rivals.

This graphic clearly shows Barcelona's problem in that department. As for Atletico Madrid, they still boast La Liga's best defensive numbers but they are on course to concede more than in any full season under Diego Simeone.

As a result, their lack of fluency going forwards is costing Atletico points and potentially even a place in next season's Champions League.

That's because Sevilla are the new force in the race for the title, reinvigorated by Jorge Sampaoli's intense, pressing game. But it has been a season full of shocks.

Newly-promoted Alaves won at Barcelona, little Leganes held Atletico in their first ever La Liga home game and the ongoing miracle that is Eibar continue to surprise. Competition is fierce.

But how about the individual success stories? We have taken a look at the statistical stars of the season so far.

Real Madrid's Toni Kroos tops the assist charts with nine, highlighting his important role in making things happen for the league leaders.

When it comes to dribbling, it is no surprise to see Neymar and Lionel Messi up there but level with Messi is Celta Vigo's 21-year-old Theo Bongonda. He's one to keep an eye on.

And a mention too for Steven N'Zonzi and the vital part he has played in Sevilla's success. Nobody is averaging more passes per game than the tall midfielder.

Now for the most important statistic - goals. Luis Suarez leads the way on this front with 16 after his late equaliser at Betis, followed by team-mate Lionel Messi on 15. Cristiano Ronaldo is back on 13 and has some catching up to do.

But how about the goal of the season so far? There are plenty to choose from - such as Raul Garcia's goal for Athletic Bilbao against Deportivo La Coruna in September or how about Kevin-Prince Boateng's finish against Villarreal in October? Antoine Griezmann is another contender for his wonder goal against Athletic in January.
