Ligue 1 giants look to distance themselves from midfielder

Lyon have looked to distance themselves from making a move for Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira in January. The 33-year-old is keen to leave the Nerazzurri, having fallen out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho, and rescue his World Cup hopes with France. Manchester City have been most strongly linked with the former Arsenal star where Vieira would link up once more with ex-Inter boss Roberto Mancini. However, despite making contact with the Frenchman over a possible move, Lyon now look likely to pull the plug on a possible switch with OL chairman Jean-Michel Aulas' special advisor Bernard Lacombe revealing that Barcelona were also considering a bid. "We talked about (Vieira) on Sunday. He is a huge player and we have had phone calls with him," Lacombe told RTL.

"We watched a lot of DVDs of him playing this season with Inter. The problem is we are not alone on that case. "Patrick has contact with great clubs, notably Barcelona, who will lose Seydou Keita and Yaya Toure (to the African Nations Cup). "Barca is thinking about him. But Patrick is keen to join us, but we have to see. He wanted to know if we fully trusted him. However he can't play in the European Cup with us. "Also we have (Maxime) Gonalons who is steadily carving out a place for himself and we don't want to close down his chances either."
