Striker facing two months out with back problem

Real Madrid are seeking a second opinion on Gonzalo Higuain's back injury before sending him for surgery. Initial tests have shown that the Argentina international has slipped a disc in his back, a problem which forced him to miss Monday's 5-0 humbling at Barcelona. Surgery would rule out the striker for up to two months and Real want to consider all options before sending Higuain under the knife. "The player met with a specialist, the coach, the fitness trainer and the entire medical staff (on Wednesday)," the head of Real's medical services Carlos Diez told the club's official website.

Surgery

"After a period of five to six weeks, during which no improvement was seen, we all agree that he should have surgery. "We must now decide what specialist to see for a second opinion and, if we all agree, proceed with the operation. "Should this be the case, Higuain will be unable to participate in sports for approximately two months." Higuain's injury will come as a major blow to Real boss Jose Mourinho but could give Karim Benzema more opportunities to impress.
