Dutchman reveals Porto and Benfica interest
Everton new boy Royston Drenthe believes he has 'something to prove' after his move to Real Madrid turned sour.
The 24-year-old was one of football's hottest prospects when he joined the Spanish giants from Feyenoord four years ago after starring at the 2007 European Under 21 Championship.
However, the winger failed to secure a first-team place at the Bernabeu and was sent out to Hercules on loan last season.
After a successful first half to the campaign with his new club the Dutchman then fell out with the Hercules management and found himself looking for yet another team over the summer.
Drenthe claims Portuguese giants Porto and Benfica were among the clubs keen on signing him but once he had heard of Everton's interest he set his heart on a move to Goodison.
"I am really happy I can make this step in my future. I think it is really important for me," said Drenthe.
"I think Everton is a really good step for me. I have to train hard to get in the team and then I can demonstrate my quality in the games.
"I will give everything I can and fight for the team, fight for the club.
"I have something to prove because my time at Real Madrid has ended already. It ended a year ago.
"After this year I am not a Real Madrid player anymore because this is the last year of my contract.
"Real wanted me to go to Benfica or Porto, teams like that, because they were prepared to pay a lot of money but I did not want to go.
"When my agent told me I could sign for Everton I was like 'Thank you God'."
