Former defender returns to Mestalla

Valencia have announced that Mauricio Pellegrino will be their new coach from next season after handing him a two-year deal. Current coach Unai Emery is standing down and Valencia, who have already secured third place in La Liga, have moved for Pellegrino. The 40-year-old former Valencia defender has never had a head coach role before, previously being assistant to Rafa Benitez at Inter Milan and Liverpool. Club president Manuel Llorente told the club's official website: "The board have signed and ratified the agreement reached this past Friday with Mauricio Pellegrini, who will be the first-team manager for the next two seasons." Emery's side secured third place in the Primera Division - for the third straight term - and an automatic UEFA Champions League spot on Saturday with a 1-0 home win over Villarreal. They reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and Europa League this season but were dumped out by Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively.
