Atletico's route to the final

Atletico dropped out of the Champions League en route to reaching the Europa League final.

Take a look at Atletico Madrid's route to the Europa League final ahead of their date with Fulham.

Atletico Madrid started the season in the Champions League but soon found themselves in the Europa League after a poor group stage. The Rojiblancos failed to win a single game in Group D but managed to pip APOEL Nicosia to third place by the narrowest of margins - the away goal they scored in a 1-1 draw in Cyprus. Despite that however, Atletico have still managed to progress all the way to the Europa League final, and we take a look at how they achieved it. Last 32 v Galatasaray: First leg (home): A brilliant 23rd-minute free-kick from Jose Antonio Reyes put dominant Atletico in charge at a rain-drenched Vicente Calderon but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw after Turkish giants Galatasaray equalised against the run of play through Kader Keita 13 minutes from time. Second leg (away): Substitute Diego Forlan nets a last-gasp winner to seal a 2-1 win for Atletico in Istanbul and a 3-2 aggregate victory. Earlier, Keita had quickly cancelled out Simao Sabrosa's 62nd-minute opener for Atletico, before Galatasaray were reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute when Caner Erkin was sent off. Last 16 v Sporting Lisbon: First leg (home): Atletico look to have missed their chance as they are held to a goalless draw at home by a Sporting Lisbon side who had two players sent off. Leandro Grimi (31 minutes) and Tonel (89) were the Sporting players to get their marching orders, but a below-par Atletico could not capitalise. Second leg (away): Sergio Aguero strikes twice in the first half as Atletico squeeze through on away goals following a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Portugal. Aguero netted in the third and 33 minutes, while Sporting replied through goals from Liedson (19) and Anderson Polga (44). Quarter-finals v Valencia: First leg (away): Atletico score two for the third successive away match in the Europa League as they hold Spanish rivals Valencia 2-2 in a thrilling match at the Mestalla. All the goals were scored in the second half, with Atletico twice going ahead through Forlan and Antonio Lopez, and Valencia equalising both times thanks to goals from Manuel Fernandes and David Villa. Second leg (home): Atletico secured their place in the semi-finals on the away goals rule after a tense 0-0 tie at the Vicente Calderon. Valencia laid siege to the home goal in the closing stages, Villa hitting the crossbar and Nikola Zigic having a strong claim for a penalty rejected, but the Rojiblancos held on. Semi-finals v Liverpool: First leg (home): A scrappy strike from Forlan gave Atletico a narrow but deserved lead to take to Anfield for the second leg. Forlan netted the only goal of the game in the ninth minute, but he also missed a great chance in the second half while Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina was called on to produce good saves from Simao Sabrosa and Tomas Ujfalusi. Second leg (away): Atletico secure their third successive away goals triumph in the Europa League, although they left it late at Anfield. Liverpool had turned the tie on its head with strikes from Alberto Aquilani (44) and Yossi Benayoun (95), but Forlan pulled a goal back in the 103rd minute and that extra-time effort proved enough to send the Spanish side through at the expense of the five-time European champions.
