Atalanta saw their hopes of a top-six finish dented after a 2-1 defeat at home by Sampdoria on Tuesday, while rivals Fiorentina won 2-0 at Udinese.

La Viola moved to within three points of AC Milan, who hold a match in hand, and while Atalanta remain seventh, ninth-placed Sampdoria are also now locked on 47 points.

The encounter at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia in Bergamo looked to be heading towards a draw, before Duvan Zapata won all three points for Sampdoria with six minutes left.

Gianluca Caprari had put the visitors in front from close range just before half-time, with Rafael Toloi equalising for Atalanta on 67 minutes.

Zapata, though, had the final say when the Colombian sprinted clear of the home defence and into the right side of the penalty area before coolly clipping the ball over the keeper.

At the Dacia Arena in Udine, Jordan Veretout had given Fiorentina the lead on 29 minutes from the penalty spot after Federico Chiesa had been brought down by Giuseppe Pezzella.

Chiesa also had a hand in the visitors' second goal, playing in substitute Giovanni Simeone at the edge of the penalty box.

There was late drama at Stadio Luigi Ferraris as Iuri Medeiros struck in the 90th minute to give Genoa a 2-1 win over Cagliari.

The hosts had taken the lead on 53 minutes through a bullet header from Gianluca Lapadula. Cagliari, though, levelled just after the hour through a penalty from Nicolo Barella.
