Adrian Mutu could leave Fiorentina, according to the club's sporting director Pantaleo Corvino.
The former Chelsea striker has fallen down the pecking order at the Serie A club, with coach Sinisa Mihajlovic taking a more youthful approach.
At 31, Mutu does not fall under that category, and Fiorentina may be set to offload the talented striker whose wages are amongst the highest at the club.
"When a player arrives at a certain age, and there are young champions who can replace him, we must have the courage to do things about it," said Corvino.
"We have a player with the same potential, like (Stevan) Jovetic, and we could use the really high salary that Mutu earns to strengthen us in other areas."
Corvino admits the decision to axe players of such calibre from the squad is never easy, especially when they have formed such a strong bond with the fans.
He went on, though, to say that the younger players appear to be performing much better, as they did in the UEFA Champions League last season when they qualified for the last-16 against the odds.
"It's painful for me to deprive a player like Adrian," he said. "But when Fiorentina overcame a Champions League preliminary, they did it, really, with Jovetic.
"It would be easy keeping all of the players, but it wouldn't be right. We must make choices, even if they are not very popular."
