Tevez told fans that he was returning to Boca in his prime

Carlos Tevez was welcomed home by over 40,000 fans in Buenos Aires as he rejoined boyhood club Boca Juniors.

The former West Ham, Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus striker was greeted by Diego Maradona and has been given the same No 10 shirt worn by the Argentina legend during his playing days at Boca.

"Boca is unique, nobody can understand the feeling that one can have for Boca," said Tevez, who kissed the grass at the famed La Bombonera stadium.

"There's no better day than this one. This is my home from start to finish. I'm in top condition physically as well as mentally."

The 32-year-old arrives in Argentina after a season during which he scored 29 goals in Turin, earning a second Serie A title and a runners-up spot in the Champions League.

Tevez, known as 'Apache' after the Buenos Aires slum district where he was brought up, returned to the national side this year as a substitute after three years without a call up.

He fired Argentina into the semi-finals of the Copa America with the decisive spot-kick that defeated Colombia 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out. Argentina were defeated by Chile in the final.

Maradona greeted Tevez’s return to Boca from his private box at the stadium with a banner which read: "Thank you for returning Carlitos, Maradona."

"The fans should thank Tevez," said Maradona. "Atletico Madrid put a cheque in his hands and he replied 'I want to return to Buenos Aires'."
