Inter Milan are in talks to make Luciano Spalletti their new manager, Sky sources understand.
Spalletti is out of contract this summer after guiding Roma to second place in Serie A, the third time they have finished in that position in the last four years.
Inter's Chinese owners had ambitious plans to make Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte, Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone or Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino manager.
None of them gave any indication they were willing to leave their clubs, however, and the Nerazzurri have now turned their attentions to the Stadio Olimpico instead.
Inter are seventh in Serie A with one game left - 29 points behind title winners and Champions League finalists Juventus - and will not be playing in Europe next season.
They sacked Stefano Pioli two weeks ago after starting the season with Frank de Boer as manager.
Stefano Vecchi is currently in caretaker charge for the second time this season and if Spalletti is appointed, he will become Inter's 11th manager or head coach since Roberto Mancini's four-year stint ended in 2008.
