Roma hit back in Totti row

ROMA chief Franco Baldini has hit back at Milan for the way they criticised Francesco Totti after the controversial Coppa Italia final win.

Trailing 4-1 from the first leg, Totti hauled Roma back into contention with a brace but was later sent off, along with Antonio Cassano, as Milan lifted the trophy with a 6-3 aggregate win.

Baldini was unhappy with Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani's attack on Totti for his dismissal, and said that they could have handled their victory with more class.

"Being gentlemanly in the moment of victory would have been easier, but paradoxically it hasn't been so," said Baldini.

"On Saturday night, whilst we, the team, and the whole management were congratulating them for the fantastic wins obtained by Milan, there were declarations against our captain.

"So I consider that criticisms towards Francesco Totti, who scored two fantastic goals, and was an object of provocation during the whole match, could have surely been avoided."

Cassano's dismissal effectively ended any hope Roma had of clawing back Milan's lead, and was left to publicly apologise to his team-mates and the club's supporters.

"I make my apologies firstly to my team-mates because with my dismissal they had difficulties when it had looked positive for us, but especially to our supporters who arrived in Milan.

"Unfortunately I suffered a lot in the approach to this match and I was really nervous.

"But I've seen an arrogant behaviour towards us."
