French defender opted against Spanish switch in favour of Milan move

Philippe Mexes has revealed that he snubbed the advances of Real Madrid in order to join AC Milan. The France international has officially sealed a switch to Giuseppe Meazza, penning a four-year contract in the process. He will depart current employers Roma at the end of the season, allowing him to take on a new challenge in Milan. Mexes claims the Rossoneri were the only club capable of keeping him in Italy, following seven years in Rome. He admits he was tempted to try his luck in a different country, as Real made their move, but believes he has joined a club capable of matching his ambitions. "Only Roma or Milan could make me stay in Italy," Mexes told France Football. "There was a chance that I could have left. I had contact from Real Madrid but I wanted to remain in Italy with Milan."

Proud

Mexes is looking forward to beginning life with the newly-crowned Serie A champions and is confident he can help Milan claim more major honours in the future. "I am a Milan player for the next four seasons," added the 29-year-old centre-half. "I am happy to arrive to Milan, one of the best clubs in Italy and the world. I am proud, especially when I see the new jersey with the Scudetto. "Milan is a reference for everyone and they share my ambitions. "It's a club that cultivates victories and is superior just like Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid. "I am going there to win. The Champions League is also my aim."
