Inter close on runners-up spot, Brescia relegation confirmed

Inter Milan strengthened their grip on second spot in the Serie A table with a 3-1 win over Fiorentina. Leonardo's side bounced back from the disappointment of seeing city rivals Milan lift the Scudetto to move four points clear of third-placed Napoli heading into the penultimate weekend of the season. Strikes from Giampaolo Pazzini, Esteban Cambiasso and Philippe Coutinho moved the Nerazzurri closer to a runners-up finish, with Albert Gilardino bagging Fiorentina's consolation. Rivals Napoli slumped to a 2-1 defeat at lowly Lecce in a result which could prove crucial in the home side's bid to avoid the drop. Lecce climbed out of the relegation zone above Sampdoria after substitute Javier Chevanton scored an important winner in the dying moments. Daniele Corvia put the hosts ahead with a second-half penalty before substitute Giuseppe Mascara thought he had rescued a draw for Napoli. Sampdoria slipped below Lecce into the bottom three after losing 2-1 to local rivals Genoa in the 'Derby of the Lantern'. Antonio Floro Flores' opener for Genoa on the stroke of half-time was cancelled out by Nicola Pozzi midway through the second half. Giandomenico Mesto was then sent off to leave Genoa with ten men, but Davide Ballardini's side shrugged off their numerical disadvantage to find a last-gasp winner courtesy of on-loan Wigan forward Mauro Boselli.

Relegation

Lecce's victory also means Brescia have been relegated from the top flight. Their must-win home clash with Catania ended in a disappointing 2-1 defeat, Alessandro Diamanti claiming their goal with an injury-time free-kick. Strikes from Matias Silvestre and Gonzalo Bergessio moved Catania up to 12th place. Udinese took a huge stride towards clinching the fourth UEFA Champions League qualification spot by beating nearest challengers Lazio. Antonio Di Natale scored twice in seven first-half minutes to set up a 2-1 success, with Lazio substitute Libor Kozak halving the deficit.
Boost
Cesana boosted their hopes of avoiding an instant return to Serie B with a superb 2-0 triumph at Cagliari. Chilean midfielder Luiz Jimenez grabbed a 53rd minute opener before Dominique Malonga sealed the win. Bottom-half rivals Bologna and Parma slugged out a goalless draw, with the point each edging both sides closer to safety.
