Atalanta and Lecce bow out early

Atalanta and Lecce suffered surprise early exits as a number of other Serie A sides safely progressed in the Coppa Italia. Serie A newcomers Atalanta bowed out of the competition at the first hurdle, beaten 4-3 at home by third round opponents Gubbio. The home side led 2-1 at the interval but paid for a poor second half performance, with Silvano Garibaldi's late winner knocking them out. Top flight Lecce also bowed out against Serie B opposition, with Milan Djuric and Camillo Ciano netting either side of the break for Crotone. Cagliari had no such problems, with Joaquin Larrivey's hat-trick the highlight of a 5-1 defeat of Albinoleffe, who had defender Matteo Piccini sent off 10 minutes before half-time. Hernan Crespo's double helped Parma to a 4-1 win over Grossetto, while Bari and Novara were convincing 4-0 conquerors of Avellino and Triestina respectively. Fiorentina, Catania and Bologna were all 2-1 winners, seeing off Cittadella, Brescia and Padova respectively, while Chievo edged out Livorno 1-0. Emanuele Calaio's penalty gave Siena victory over Torino, while Modena defeated Reggina 2-1 in an all-Serie B clash.
