Catania dominated but squandered a series of chances as they were unable to make the breakthrough against Atalanta in the Serie A clash at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia. Lucas Castro and Alejandro Gomez both missed golden opportunities to score for the visitors in the first half before Atalanta goalkeeper Andrea Consigli made a great save after the break to ensure his side a point and a valuable clean sheet. Gonzalo Bergessio had the first real chance for Catania in the 11th minute when he found himself in a good position outside of the box but blasted the ball over the bar. Atalanta went close soon after when Giacomo Bonaventura played a good cross into the box where German Denis was unable to keep the ball on target and headed over. Both Consigli and opposite number Mariano Andujar made a simple save each before Gomez tested the home goalkeeper with a strike from the edge of the box. Castro then failed to pounce on Gonzalo Bergessio's testing cross at the far post, as he was unable to reach the ball and poke home a simple chance which was one of the best opportunities of the match. Gomez forced another good save from Consigli just before the break with a curling strike from just outside the box as the visitors finished the first period on top. In the second half, it was all one-way traffic from Catania. First, Bergessio blazed over the bar before Consigli made another fantastic save from Francesco Lodi's inswinging corner. Nicolas Spolli and Castro then both tried their luck from distance, with both speculative strikes flying over the bar, as Atalanta somehow managed to hold on and earn themselves a point.
