Messina's Mirko Conte was overjoyed following a shock 2-1 victory over Milan at Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday.Conte is one of the more experienced members of the newly-promoted side - playing alongside no less than eight debutants in an astounding win.
"We are a team that don't give up," said Conte. "We proved that with this display.
"We are only at the beginning and we must continue in this way.
"I think we have shown that it is the right way."
Club president Pietro Franza admitted he has not dared contemplate upsetting the odds.
"Honestly I was expecting a 3-0 win for Milan," said Franza.
"For us it is an historic result and we are really, really happy.
"We arrived here thinking only of defence and aiming, possibly, to snatch a draw.
"It's an award for the players. Nobody expected a win."
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side have to be better in the future.
"We ran into a very determined opponent," said Ancelotti.
"We gave too much to get a goal, and we did not pay attention to managing the match.
"We must be more attentive and I think we will be.
"We must do better and we will do."
