Iliev joy at first goal

Ivica Iliev admits he was delighted to end his Serie A duck with the winner for Messina against Udinese.

The Serbo-Montenegrin striker joined Messina last summer from Partizan Belgrade but had gone 26 league appearances without a goal.

That barren run was ended on Saturday as Iliev popped up on the hour mark to net the only goal as Messina vanquished Udinese.

Iliev was overjoyed to finally get his name on the scoresheet and admitted it was an emotional moment in his career.

"I'm really happy," beamed Iliev. "This goal is a dream, I've had big emotions.

"I have waited for this goal for a long time."

The victory over Udinese secured Messina's spot in mid-table in Serie A and Iliev feels it has been a positive campaign at Stadio Giovanni Celeste.

He added: "The season is just about ended for us and this is a great thing.

"Now we have 39 points, a good advantage over the other sides who are struggling for survival, too.

"Let's hope we obtain more points and we will be safe. Messina are a great team, with big team-mates and a good group and this is important to achieve those results."
