Messina defender Marco Zanchi has failed a dope test.

The Italian Olympic Committee have announced that Messina defender Marco Zanchi has failed a dope test.

Zanchi was tested on the opening day of the Serie A season when his side faced Lazio and tested positive for metilprednisolon, a steroid-related anti-inflammatory agent.

The 28-year-old will undergo a second test with the threat of a suspension hanging over him should it confirm the earlier result.

Manager Bortolo Mutti has selected the former Bologna player for Messina's first three games this season.
