Bayer Leverkusen have vowed to do 'all they can' to bring Michael Ballack back to the club.
The Germany international is available as a free agent after Chelsea decided against offering him fresh terms this summer.
A return to his homeland is now on the cards, with Leverkusen among the leading candidates to land his signature.
Ballack spent three years with the club between 1999 and 2002, helping them to the UEFA Champions League final in his final season before heading off to Bayern Munich.
Leverkusen are now determined to add him to him their ranks once more, with general manager Wolfgang Holzhauser revealing that they are ready to step up their efforts.
"We know that he has two definite offers and we are now ready to start negotiations," he said.
"We will do all we can to bring Ballack back. We are in close contact with him and his agent."
While optimistic regarding Leverkusen's chances of landing Ballack, Holzhauser knows they are relying on the 33-year-old being prepared to take a wage cut.
They cannot compete with the likes of Wolfsburg and Hamburg when it comes to salaries and hope Ballack will follow his heart when making his decision.
"If he does come to us, then he is going to have to make sacrifices," added Holzhauser in the
Express newspaper.
"We cannot compete with what the others are offering."
