Midfielder forced to retire after long-term ankle injury

Former Germany midfielder Tim Borowski has been forced to retire from football due to ongoing injury problems with his right ankle. The former Werder Bremen star failed to recover from surgery following an injury he picked up whilst playing for his club in October 2010. Borowski, 32, said: "I had a wonderful time as a footballer with many great, emotional moments. I'll always keep that with me." The Neubrandenburg-born player, who was best known for his passing and vision, made the majority of his 236 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen. He also spent a season at Bayern Munich as well as making 33 appearances for the national side. Borowski's contract was not renewed beyond the end of last season by President Klaus-Dieter Fischer and head coach Thomas Schaaf. He made a final, emotional, appearance for the River Islanders on the last day of the season against Schalke. Borowski, however, is in talks on a likely future role at the Bundesliga club.
