Dutchman replaces Rangnick after also attracting Hamburg interest
Huub Stevens has been appointed Schalke coach for the second time in his career on a two-year contract to replace Ralf Rangnick.
The Dutchman, who was also linked with the vacancy at Hamburg, takes over from Rangnick, who resigned last week due to exhaustion syndrome.
Stevens was previously in charge of Schalke between 1996 and 2002, during which time he won the DFB Pokal twice and the Uefa Cup.
He has agreed a deal until 2013 and is expected to oversee training for the first time on Tuesday morning ahead of Thursday's Europa League tie against Maccabi Haifa.
The 57-year-old had been sacked by Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg last season, and has also undertaken spells at PSV Eindhoven, Hamburg, Roda JC Kerkrade, Cologne and Hertha Berlin.
One of his former teams Hamburg were understood to have sounded out Stevens about a return, but withdrew their interest following his talks with Schalke.
Hamburg's general manager Frank Arnesen told
Bild earlier this week: "We are going to need a manager that wants to come to us 100 per cent."
Michael Oenning was recently sacked by Hamburg and former Netherlands international Marco van Basten is among the options to take the post.
Carl-Edgar Jarchow, chairman of Hamburg's supervisory board, said: "We are in talks with several managers, Marco van Basten is one of these men.
"We have not yet made a decision. Everything is still possible."
