Schalke's Julian Draxler has been ruled out until the new year with a hamstring injury which requires surgery.
The attacking midfielder suffered the injury during Friday's Bundesliga game against Augsburg and tests have revealed a partial tear in his right hamstring, the club announced on Monday.
The Germany international has travelled to Stuttgart for an operation.
Schalke said in a statement the 21-year-old would miss the rest of the year, meaning he will not return until after the winter break at the earliest.
The injury to such a key player is a blow to new Schalke boss Roberto Di Matteo, whose side lie eighth in the Bundesliga and are fighting to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League.
