Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez made his long awaited return to training on Wednesday following eight months out with a torn cruciate knee ligament.

The Spain international, who was a key part of Bayern's 2013 UEFA Champions League winning side, had been sidelined since last August after suffering the injury in his left knee during the 2-0 German Super Cup defeat at Borussia Dortmund.

Martinez, 26, underwent surgery in the USA before beginning a gruelling process of rehabilitation, which he has now successfully completed.

"It's great news, I am really happy," Martinez told the club's official website.

"It's just the first step, I know there is a lot of work ahead of me and I hope that I can soon get a few minutes of game time again."

Martinez was in the stands to watch Bayern's stunning 6-1 thrashing of FC Porto in Tuesday night's UEFA Champions League quarter-final, second-leg.

The five-time European champions scored five goals inside the opening 40 minutes to book their place in the semi-finals for the fourth successive season.

Following the win, a delighted Martinez admitted he was touched when his team-mates included him in the celebrations after the final whistle in Munich.

"They applauded me and I believe everyone is happy to see me back in training," he added.

With Pep Guardiola's side still bidding for the treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League titles, no date has been set for Martinez's return.

Bayern also remain without injured wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben as well as defenders Medhi Benatia and David Alaba.
