Hoeness expects an announcement in 'the next few days'
Bayern Munich could announce before the end of March that Jupp Heynckes will become their new manager next season, according to club president Uli Hoeness.
It has already been confirmed that current Allianz Arena boss Louis van Gaal will leave in the summer following a disappointing domestic and European campaign.
Reports had suggested that Germany manager Joachim Low was Bayern's top target, but the 51-year-old surprisingly signed a new contract with the national team earlier in March which will run until after the 2014 World Cup.
Heynckes now appears set to succeed Van Gaal after the current Bayer Leverkusen manager decided against extending his contract and said recently that he had been offered the job at Bayern.
Crazy
"Basically, both sides are interested," said Hoeness, who is a close friend of two-time former Bayern manager Heynckes.
"I think in the next few days there will be something good coming out. The board will approve it."
Hoeness had previously criticised Van Gaal, but he now accepts that the appointment of the Dutchman was a good move after ex-Germany manager Jurgen Klinsmann's short and unsuccessful stint in the wake of the 2006 World Cup.
"It was totally right to bring in a football teacher with Van Gaal. Hiring Klinsmann was a huge mistake," said Hoeness.
"Everyone was crazy after the summer fairytale (the World Cup) and no-one realised that already then Joachim Low was doing all the work."
