Freiburg have completed the free transfer capture of Romanian midfielder Maximilian Nicu from relegated Hertha Berlin.
The Romania international has signed a contract until June 2012 at Freiburg and becomes the club's third summer capture following Zvonko Pamic's loan move from Bayer Leverkusen and the permanent arrival of Hannover 96's Jan Rosenthal.
Freiburg general manager Dirk Dufner welcomed the arrival of the 27-year-old, believing he will bring both speed and hard-work to the club's midfield.
Dufner told
kicker-Sportmagazin: "We are pleased to have been able to capture him. With his arrival our midfield is complete, we have a speedy and hard-running new player in Maximilian Nicu."
Drobny interest
Meanwhile, Nicu's former Hertha team-mate Jaroslav Drobny is edging closure to a free transfer switch to Bundesliga outfit Hamburg.
The 30-year-old former Fulham FC and Ipswich Town shot-stopper is negotiating a two-year-contract as Hamburg seek to add competition for Frank Rost between the posts.
New Hamburg boss Armin Veh has confirmed he is keen to sign a new goalkeeper, saying: "Nothing has been decided just yet, but we are attempting to sign a new goalkeeper.
"That's true. (General manager) Bastian Reinhardt has already told Frank Rost we are going to sign a new goalkeeper. It is a great thing to have a certain competition for starting jobs in the line-up."
Drobny told
Bild he would be flattered by a move to Hamburg.
"Hamburg is a big club in the Bundesliga and is always aiming to qualify for a European club competition," he added.
