Hamburg goalkeeper Frank Rost has avoided a serious knee ligament injury but is still facing at least two games on the sidelines.
The 37-year-old sustained the damage in Friday's 0-0 draw against defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich when he collided with Bastian Schweinsteiger.
It was initially feared that Rost, who is Hamburg's first-choice goalkeeper, could be set for a minimum of one month out with torn ligaments.
But an MRI scan has since revealed that the damage is minor and that there is no need for surgery, meaning the shot-stopper is only likely to miss a couple of games.
Damage
"He (Rost) can start his recovery process immediately but he will not be playing in the German Cup against Frankfurt on Wednesday or against Cologne in the Bundesliga (on Saturday)," Hamburg said in a statement.
Rost told
Hamburger Morgenpost following the match against Bayern: "Right after the incident with Bastian Schweinsteiger I felt that there could have been damage.
"I wanted to keep cool, to wait and see if the pain would drop."
Hamburg manager Armin Veh is adamant that the injury will not cause Rost to drop behind Jaroslav Drobny in his pecking order.
Veh said: "Frank Rost is our regular, starting goalkeeper. Jaroslav Drobny is his back-up. There has been no change."
