Dieter Hecking has signed a two-year contract extension with Wolfsburg and will now remain at the Volkswagen Arena until June 2018.

The former Nurnberg and Hannover 96 head coach has been rewarded for Wolfsburg’s impressive 2014/15 season, which included a runners-up finish in the Bundesliga as well as 3-1 German Cup Final victory over Borussia Dortmund in May.

Hecking’s previous deal was due to run out at the end of the season but the 50-year-old will now remain with the club until June 2018.

"I've always said I'd like to remain beyond 2016 at Wolfsburg where I feel I have the full confidence of those in charge," said Hecking.

Wolfsburg started the new season well by upsetting the odds to defeat Bayern Munich on penalties in the German Super Cup earlier this month. Hecking’s side also won their German Cup first round match 4-1 at Stuttgarter Kickers on Saturday.

Wolfsburg kick off their Bundesliga season at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on August 16.
