Martin Jol's side took the lead at De Kuip just before the break through Siem De Jong. Summer signing Mounir El Hamdaoui then doubled their advantage just before the hour mark.
Andre Bahia set up a frantic finish as he pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining, but Ajax held on to go top and maintain their unbeaten start to the new season.
PSV Eindhoven could have gone top rather than Ajax, but they were held to a goalless draw at

VVV took the lead on 16 minutes through Ruud Boymans, but Van Wolfswinkel levelled midway through the first half.
Boymans then restored VVV's lead on 72 minutes, only for Van Wolfswinkel to level again just moments later.
Then with just five minutes left Nana Asare grabbed the winner for Utrecht.
