Ajax and Milan legend will take charge of club in the summer
Dutch legend Marco van Basten will make a return to management in the summer when he takes over as coach at Eredivisie side Heerenveen.
The 48-year-old, a former hero of Ajax, AC Milan and the Netherlands national team, will replace current boss Ron Jans, who has chosen not to extend his deal when it expires at the end of the season.
Van Basten's last management position was at Ajax, where he spent a year before departing in 2009 after failing to guide the Dutch giants to UEFA Champions League qualification.
Prior to that he coached the Holland national side for four years, leading them at the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008.
After leaving Ajax the Dutchman worked as a pundit for Dutch television channel
Sport 1.
New challenge
Van Basten told a press conference on Monday: "This feels like a good and new challenge.
"I will bring with me the experience I have gained working with the Dutch national team and at Ajax. I am wiser now than then.
"A few weeks ago I spoke with Heerenveen for the first time. These conversations inspired a lot of confidence.
"SC Heerenveen is a very nice club. Last summer I decided I would prefer to work in the Netherlands than go abroad."
Asked if he felt he had to prove himself at Heerenveen, Van Basten replied: "You should always have to do that, wherever you are going to work.
"Even Sir Alex Ferguson must do that every day. That will not be different here."
