Twente go top as Ajax extend winning run
FC Twente climbed to the top of the table as Ajax and Feyenoord also won on a dramatic day of Eredivisie action.
PSV Eindhoven have been difficult to dislodge at the summit but their shock defeat to NAC Breda on Saturday left the door open for
FC Twente.
And Steve McClaren's men took advantage by overcoming bottom club
RKC Waalwijk 1-0 away from home.
RKC frustrated Twente for over an hour and looked set to end a run of seven consecutive losses to claim a surprise point.
However, Kenneth Perez struck with 21 minutes remaining to send Twente two points clear of PSV with eight games of the season to go.
Ajax are just six points off the pace after beating
Sparta Rotterdam 3-0 to notch a sixth victory in a row.
Siem de Jong broke the deadlock for Ajax on 14 minutes and Gregory van der Wiel doubled their lead before half-time.
Dennis Rommedahl then got in on the act after 61 minutes to keep Ajax in the title reckoning.
Fourth-placed
Feyenoord prevailed 4-2 away to
Roda JC in a match which also saw both sides reduced to ten men.
Sedou Cisse fired the visitors in front after 14 minutes and then made it 2-0 on the hour mark after Roda's Ruud Vormer had been sent off.
Jeanvion Matondo pulled a goal back for Roda two minutes later but Luigi Bruins quickly restored Feyenoord's two-goal advantage and Roy Makaay then struck a fourth.
Feyenoord's Brazilian goalkeeper was then given his marching orders with six minutes remaining and Boldiszar Bodor hit a late consolation for Roda.
Groningen defeated mid-table rivals
VVV Venlo 1-0 at home thanks to Tim Matavz's effort 20 minutes from time.
FC Utrecht also recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over
NEC Nijmegen after an action-packed finale.
Bram Nuytinck was red carded for NEC with eight minutes left and Utrecht capitalised on their extra man courtesy of a late Ricky van Wolfswinkel goal.
