Romanian champions show coach the door

Cluj coach Sorin Cartu has been sacked after smashing up the visiting team dugout during the UEFA Champions League clash at Basel. Cartu vented his frustration on the plastic structure of the shelter as his side crashed out of the competition on Tuesday on the back of a 1-0 defeat to the Swiss side. The coach repeatedly kicked the side of the shelter with his feet, smashing through the Perspex. Romanian champions Cluj said in a statement: "The values and image of our club cannot be associated with the actions of coach Sorin Cartu and that is why we have decided to part ways." Club president Iuliu Muresan added: "We would like to give our most sincere apologies, first of all to Uefa, the host of the Champions League competition, to the Swiss club FC Basel, to our fans and to all football and sports fans." Cartu will be replaced by another member of the Cluj coaching staff, Alin Minteuan. The club sit bottom of qualifying Group E having collected three points from five matches.
