We look at the best and worst moments from the last 16 second legs in the UEFA Champions League.
Team of the week
Game of the round
Bayern Munich v Inter Milan
Quite how Bayern managed to come unstuck in this game remains a mystery, as at 2-1 up on the night at the Allianz Arena and 3-1 ahead on aggregate, a fine strike from Wesley Sneijder and a late, late Goran Pandev effort put the European champions in the hat for the quarter-finals. Louis van Gaal's men were in cruise control and wasted a number of chances, with Franck Ribery causing all sorts of problems cutting inside off the left flank. Yet the Nerazzurri did not win the treble last season for nothing and the Italians showed the spirit of true champions, demonstrating great heart to fight their way back into the match. Samuel Eto'o was the star of the show for Inter and their quest to defend their title continues.
Player of the round
Lionel Messi
The diminutive Argentine is never short of plaudits and was once again the star of the show as Barcelona put Arsenal to the sword with a 3-1 win at Camp Nou which booked their place in the quarter-finals. Messi bagged two goals, to add to the four he scored against the Premier League club last season, tormenting the Gunners defence who had no answer to his forward runs. His first came as Cesc Fabregas inexplicably gave the ball away on the edge of his own box - Andres Iniesta slid Messi in and he showed superb control to lift the ball over Manuel Almunia before firing home. A second was added after the break from the penalty spot after Pedro had been felled by Laurent Koscielny. Other top performers in the second-leg ties included Manchester United's Javier Hernandez, Inter Milan's Samuel Eto'o, Tottenham's Sandro and Schalke's Jefferson Farfan.
Goal of the round
Marcelo
The Real Madrid full-back got the ball rolling for his side against Lyon on Wednesday night in Spain, assuring Los Blancos' hoodoo in the last 16 came to an end. Marcelo played a neat one-two with Cristiano Ronaldo midway through the Lyon half and then glided through the opposition defence before getting his shot off under real pressure. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris got a hand to it but could not prevent it finding the back of the net. A great solo effort which lifted the roof off the Bernabeu and sent Madrid on the way to a fine victory. There were a number of top goals in the second-leg ties, with Shakhtar Donetsk's Willian and Lionel Messi also catching the eye with superb efforts.
Disaster of the round
Roma
Having been defeated 3-2 at home in their first-leg tie by Shakhtar Donetsk, Roma were expected to put up more of a fight in the return trip to the Ukraine. However, things did not work out as planned for the Giallorossi as they capitulated to a disastrous 3-0 loss, exiting from the competition with a whimper. On a terrible night in Donetsk, Philippe Mexes was sent off for a second yellow card four minutes before half-time as goals from Tomas Hubschman, Willian and Eduardo put the Italians to the sword. Shakhtar are now in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history and they fully deserve their place.
Controversy of the round
Robin van Persie v Barcelona
Now Arsenal may have been well and truly outplayed at the Camp Nou as they crashed out of the Champions League to Barcelona for the second season in succession, but they have the right to feel incredibly hard done by following a terrible decision to award a red card to striker Robin van Persie. With the Gunners level at 1-1 on the night and 3-2 up on aggregate, the Dutch ace was shown a second yellow card after hitting a shot just one second after the referee had blown for offside. An absurd call from official Massimo Busacca that left Arsene Wenger infuriated - and rightly so.
Clearance of the round
Andrea Ranocchia
With Bayern in the ascendancy against Inter, young defender Ranocchia had to produce a stunning piece of play to prevent the Germans going 3-1 up on the night. The 23-year-old Italian centre-back atoned for a poor miss in front of goal during the first leg with a fine block to deny Thomas Muller. Mario Gomez stretched to get a touch on Franck Ribery's ball to the back post and send it across goal, but with the ball rolling along the line Ranocchia just got to it ahead of Muller and knocked it against him onto the inside of the post before it went to safety. It was a vital intervention that if not made would have left Inter in dire straits and with little hope of qualification. A mention should also go to Tottenham defender William Gallas' block against AC Milan on the line at White Hart Lane, which was also a heroic clearance.
