Low's men allow two-goal lead to slip at home

Germany have been held to a 2-2 draw by Belarus as they step up their preparations ahead of Euro 2008. Joachim Low will have been worried by the defensive frailties of his side after they let an early two-goal lead slip against a side ranked 60th in the world. Miroslav Klose gave the Germans a 10th-minute lead when he latched onto Lukas Podolski's clever pass to round Vasily Khomutovsky with ease and slot into an empty net. 10 minutes later their advantage was doubled after David Odonkor charged down the right and saw his sharp cross diverted into his own net by Vladimir Korytko. However Vitali Bulyga, who had troubled the German back line throughout, pulled one back for Belarus on the hour mark, keeping his cool impressively when presented with a one-on-one opportunity with Jens Lehmann. The lively striker then grabbed his second of the game with just two minutes remaining as he latched onto a defensive error to fire past the stranded Lehmann.

Lively

Low was missing a number of his more established stars, but will be disappointed by Germany's failings in front of goal. Their wastefulness almost cost them dear, as Vitaly Radzionau and Viacheslau Hleb had both forced former Arsenal keeper Lehmann into fine stops before Bulyga's late leveller. The only positive the German coach will be able to take from the contest in Kaiserslautern is that 19-year-old rookie Marko Marin looked lively after being handed his senior debut as a second-half substitute. Germany now return to their training base in Mallorca before Low names his 26-man squad for the upcoming European Championships on Wednesday. They will then have one final game, against Serbia on Saturday, before their bid for international glory gets under way against neighbours Poland on 8th June.
