Tardelli names squad for Armenia and Andorra games
Winger Aiden McGeady returns to the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Armenia and Andorra.
Ireland take on the European minnows next month as they look to recover from their last competitive outing - when Thierry Henry's controversial handball shattered their World Cup dream and sent France to South Africa.
McGeady was given permission to miss the friendly clash with Argentina last week as he finalised his transfer from Celtic to Spartak Moscow.
Assistant manager Marco Tardelli has named the 25-man squad in the absence of Giovanni Trapattoni, who is still recovering from abdominal surgery which caused him to miss the Argentina game.
The squad has a familiar look to it, with Glenn Whelan, Sean St Ledger, Shane Long and Kevin Doyle also returning after missing the last match.
Shay Given is expected to win his 105th and 106th caps in goal despite not making the recent Manchester City first XIs.
Given's City team-mate Greg Cunningham, Darren O'Dea, Paul Green and Keith Treacy will all hope to make their first competitive appearances for the Republic after earning a call.
Tardelli said: "We go into this double-header of qualifiers well prepared and confident having held a successful training camp in May and played a number of competitive and challenging friendly matches over the summer.
"Playing Armenia in Yerevan will be a tough test for the team but when we return to play our first competitive home game four days later, we hope to go to Aviva Stadium having made a positive start to the campaign."
Ireland will be looking to get maximum points in Armenia on 3rd September and it will be the same case when Andorra travel to the Aviva Stadium four days later.
Meanwhile, the Under-21s will have an unchanged squad for their matches against Switzerland and Turkey in the 2011 European Championships qualifiers.
