Uefa president could be tempted to run for top job

Michel Platini has refused to rule out the prospect of running for Fifa presidency in four years' time. The Frenchman is currently head of Uefa, European football's governing body. He has held that position since January 2007 and was recently re-elected for four more years. Platini could have eyes on the top job in the future, though, with a post at the head of Fifa holding some appeal. Sepp Blatter is the current occupant of that role, but he has vowed to step aside in 2015 should he be re-elected this year. He must first see off Mohamed Bin Hammam in a June election, but Platini has hinted that he could be tempted to run in the future regardless of who is in charge. "Let's meet again in three years and then I will tell you," he said.

Support

For now Platini must decide whose side he will be taking in the forthcoming Fifa elections. He said: "You ask me who I will support? In 1998 [when he worked on Blatter's election bid] I was only Michel Platini, I was only thinking of myself. "Today I'm president of Uefa and this is something new. There are two candidates - I'm going to think about this, consult with my vice-presidents and the executive committee and see what position we will adopt. I can't think about myself any more." Platini is aware that Uefa hold a strong hand in the Fifa poll, with European executives making up a large percentage of the vote. He added: "We have 53 countries so yes it could be [decisive]. If they follow the vote of the Uefa president it could be but I don't know if that will happen. "But to have two candidates is good for democracy, good for ideas, for change, for everything. It's good for Fifa."
