Bulgaria have appointed Luboslav Penev as their new head coach after they failed to qualify for Euro 2012.

Former international claims Bulgaria top-job

The Bulgarian Football Union have unveiled former international striker Luboslav Penev as the new Bulgaria national coach following the dismissal of Lothar Matthaus. The former Litex Lovech manager was appointed on Wednesday after the Tricolors failed to qualify for Euro 2012 with only five points from seven games in Group G. In 2009 Penev led CSKA Sofia into the group stages of the Europa League with a 2-1 victory over Dynamo Moscow before resigning in November the same year. BFU president Borislav Mihaylov said: "He (Penev) knows the players very well and I think he is the best choice from among the coaches we have picked." Penev succeeds Matthaus who was sacked for breaching the pre-requisite of his contract that stipulated Bulgaria reach the Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine next summer.
