Roy Hodgson has named a youthful England squad for Wednesday's friendly against Italy but Michael Carrick also earns a recall.
There are first senior call-ups for Tottenham duo Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore with Hodgson happy to rest many of his senior players in order to take a look at fringe members of the squad.
Captain Steven Gerrard is omitted along with the entire first-choice back-four from Euro 2012 and striker Wayne Rooney.
But the main talking point is likely to be the return of Carrick after the 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder became the focus of debate in the summer as England again struggled to retain the ball.
Hodgson had previously suggested that Carrick had been left out after expressing a desire not to be called up if it meant sitting on the bench, but he is now set for a first cap since 2010.
Frank Lampard is also back after missing Euro 2012 due to injury, while five of Great Britain's Olympic squad are included despite only being eliminated from the tournament last Saturday.
With Italy also set to rest key players for the match in Berne, both sides will have an unfamiliar look in a game that England coach Gary Neville has already insisted is not about the result.
