Joe Hart says England should have beaten Italy

Goalkeeper Joe Hart was disappointed with England’s 1-1 draw in Turin and felt Italy were there for the taking.

Hart won his 50th international cap in Tuesday’s friendly, and the Manchester City keeper admitted it took England 45 minutes to get into the game.

Southampton striker Graziano Pelle put the hosts in front with a header Hart could do nothing about on 29 minutes, but England were much improved in the second, Andros Townsend equalising with a superb shot on 79.

Hart insists England deserved more, and should have won the game, with Gigi Buffon by far the busier of the two keepers.

“We’ve dominated a lot of games and we anticipated doing that tonight but we didn’t,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.

“We got told that (at half-time). We showed what you want to show in the second half. We got on with it – we got stuck in. I think Italy were happy with the 1-1.

“It could have - and should have - been a victory. We had enough chances. Buffon is a fantastic goalkeeper. He made some big saves for them.

“It was promising but we want to win those games. A 1-1 is nice after being 1-0 down but we’d like to have won.

“We know there is progress. We know it every day in training. We know it with the squad, the pace, the power, the organisation that we’ve got. It was nice to readjust after a very disappointing first half.”
