Winger disappointed to be left out of World Cup squad

Theo Walcott has expressed his disappointment after being left out of England's World Cup squad, but insists he 'completely respects' Fabio Capello's decision. Arsenal winger Walcott was the surprise omission from Capello's final 23-man squad for the tournament which flies out to South Africa on Wednesday. Walcott, who had been a shock inclusion in Sven Goran Eriksson's 2006 World Cup squad, has failed to convince Capello he is worthy of a place in the 2010 renewal. The 21-year-old accepts the England coach's decision and has offered his backing to those who have earned a spot in the squad.

Very disappointed

"I am very disappointed not to be included in the squad going out to South Africa, but completely respect Mr Capello's decision," said Walcott. "I would like to wish the team the best of luck and hope they have a really successful tournament." The former Southampton youngster has endured an indifferent season at club level with Arsenal as injury restricted Walcott to 23 Premier League appearances. Upon returning to fitness, he was unable to recapture his best form and was criticised for his performance in England's friendly win over Egypt in March. Though he scored a stunning hat-trick in Croatia in the early stages of the World Cup qualification campaign, his displays in the friendlies against Mexico and Japan over the past week also failed to advertise his claims.
