England midfielder still troubled by temperature

James Milner was again absent from training as England were put through their paces with the clock ticking down to their World Cup opener against USA. The Aston Villa midfielder was kept away from the main group on Tuesday as he was suffering with a raised temperature. And while Milner's condition had improved slightly on Wednesday, he was confined to gym work while 21 members of Fabio Capello's party undertook their usual drills at the Bafokeng Sports Centre base. Tottenham centre-back Ledley King was the other player not involved with his team-mates as he continues to work to a specialised programme which has been designed to rest his chronic knee problem. Winger Shaun Wright-Phillips returned to training having recovered from the minor knee injury which prevented his involvement the previous day. England's bid for global glory kicks off against the United States in Rustenburg on Saturday evening with question marks over several key areas of Capello's starting XI. David James has been handed the No.1 shirt in the squad, but is not certain to start due to strong competition from Rob Green and Joe Hart and concerns over a minor knee ailment.

Decide

Capello must also decide who will replace crocked captain Rio Ferdinand alongside John Terry at the heart of his defence with King, Matthew Upson, Jamie Carragher and late arrival Michael Dawson all in the frame. Star striker Wayne Rooney will spearhead the forward line, but whether he operates alongside Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch or in front of a five-man midfield is still to be determined. Holding midfielder Gareth Barry is making better than expected progress from his ankle injury, but is not expected to feature in the first game, meaning Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are likely to be paired in the centre. Capello, who reportedly read the riot act to his players at half-time of their warm-up match against the Platinum Stars on Monday, showed another flash of anger as the training session got under way on Wednesday morning. The Italian was unimpressed to see a TV camera crew filming his players away from a designated area and made his feelings known in no uncertain terms before the offenders were moved on.
