Portugal star backs former Man United team-mate
Cristiano Ronaldo has leaped to the defence of former team-mate Wayne Rooney, who has been criticised for his performance in the World Cup so far.
Rooney has played poorly in both of England's games in South Africa, first against USA and then against Algeria.
The Manchester United striker has looked lacklustre this summer and after the Algeria game he made a snarling comment to a pitch-side television camera about England fans' booing.
But Ronaldo, who partnered Rooney in attack during his time at Old Trafford, insists the 24-year-old is trying his hardest to fire the Three Lions to success.
"Wayne Rooney tried very hard, he's always like that, but he didn't play alone," he said.
"So it's difficult, when it's not coming, when you don't score a goal or play well, it is always the big players' fault.
"Wayne is a great player and will do a good job. He'll try very hard to do a good job."
England need a win against Slovenia on Wednesday as they look to progress from Group C.
Fabio Capello's men were expected to easily qualify from the group, and Ronaldo admits he is surprised they have not won yet.
He added: "I saw England's games and I'm quite surprised they didn't win them."
