Ashley Williams feels Wales owe caretaker manager Brian Flynn a good performance against Switzerland on Tuesday.
The captain has acknowledged the players let him down at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday night as Wales crashed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bulgaria in their Euro 2012 qualifier.
Flynn, who is hoping to land the role on a full-time basis, will now travel to Basel with his side for the vital Group G encounter.
Although the result has left Wales' hopes of reaching the finals looking unlikely, Williams admits the players are now desperate for a win.
Disappointed
The Swansea defender, who was handed the armband by Flynn in the absence of Craig Bellamy, said: "We have worked well all week and I wouldn't like to say we just let him down.
"We have probably let ourselves and everyone involved down, not just him.
"We would have liked to have got a win for him to repay him for the week we've had. We've thoroughly enjoyed it.
"We were desperate to get a win and were all looking forward to the game. I'm so disappointed.
"We have got to try to get three points in Switzerland and then see where we are."
Confident
Fellow defender Sam Ricketts, who collected his second booking of the competition against Bulgaria, is confident his team-mates can start to put things right at St. Jakob-Park without him.
The Bolton player said: "It is not difficult to lift yourself, it is an honour to play for your country.
"We are bitterly disappointed now but we will analyse what needs to be worked on. It is a tall order but it doesn't mean we are going to stop trying.
"The lads are honest, youthful, hard-working and talented. They will never chuck the towel in."
