Republic boss hopeful of returning to work within weeks

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has denied suffering a stroke and insists he is recovering well following surgery. The 71-year-old Italian underwent the scheduled surgery in Milan last month and plans to return to work in the coming weeks. Trapattoni intends to travel to Dublin as planned later this month to announce his squad for the Carling Nations Cup clash with Wales. Ireland are currently second in their Euro 2012 qualifying group behind Russia with seven points from their opening four matches.

Recovering

"I had a scheduled operation to clean the carotid artery on December 28 in Milan," he said. "I am recovering well and expect to return to work in the coming weeks. "Contrary to media speculation, I can confirm that I have not suffered a stroke. "I will be in Ireland on January 24 to announce my squad for the Carling Nations Cup match against Wales on February 8."
