Wesley Sneijder insists dropped striker Robin van Persie should be part of the Netherlands squad if he is fully fit.
Netherlands manager Danny Blind left the Fenerbahce man out of the upcoming friendlies against Wales and Germany, citing fitness as the main reason for his omission.
Sneijder feels Van Persie should be part of the squad if he is fit, after the 32-year-old started Fenerbahce's last six games.
"Van Persie should be part of the team if he is fully match fit," Sneijder told Algemeen Dagblad.
"But it is not up to me to determine whether someone is fit or not.
"I was in a similar situation two years ago and there are two things you can do. You can either throw in the towel or you work your arse off and prove everybody wrong. I did the latter and I hope Robin will do the same.
"You are going through hell if something like this happens. First you lose the captaincy and then everything just seems to slip through your fingers."
After finishing third in the 2014 World Cup, the Netherlands failed to qualify for Euro 2016, finishing fourth in Group A with just four wins and a draw out of 10 games.
