Arsenal boss baffled as Holland select injured striker

Arsene Wenger has been left bemused by Holland's decision to include Robin van Persie in their squad for the friendly against Turkey. Arsenal's Dutch international striker is currently working his way back to full fitness after suffering an ankle injury against Blackburn at the end of August and is still to return to training with the Gunners. But Holland coach Bert van Marwijk has named the Emirates Stadium forward in his preliminary party for the clash with Turkey in Amsterdam on 17th November. Wenger claimed in October it would be 'an absolute scandal' if Van Marwijk selected one of his key men for international duty when he has not been able to feature for his club.

Surprised

But the French tactician's words have fallen on deaf ears with the former Feyenoord frontman named in the initial 24-man party. And Wenger was at a loss to explain the decision when questioned on Van Persie's inclusion in the wake of Arsenal's 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. "He has not played with us or practised with the group at the moment, so I am quite surprised he is in the national team," he said. Van Persie missed a significant chunk of last season after tearing ankle ligaments while on international duty in a friendly against Italy in November of 2009.
