Nesta suffers new scare

ITALY defender Alessandro Nesta has suffered a new injury scare after being forced to pull out of training.

The Lazio ace had to withdraw from a training session on Wednesday after just five minutes.

The accomplished defender had been doubtful for Thursday's crucial game with Mexico after picking up a foot injury in last week's defeat to Croatia.

Nesta was forced off midway through the first half of the Croatia defeat after being caught by an opponent's studs, being replaced by Internazionale star Marco Materazzi.

Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni will leave the decision on Nesta's fitness until the last minute

"There are still some doubts about Nesta," said Trapattoni. "He played in normal trainers and then tried it out with football boots - he's optimistic and we have until the very last minute to think about it.

"At this moment I don't want to think about a replacement for Nesta."

Nesta revealed he was still in pain with the injury, but is hopeful of being fit.

"The sole of the foot still hurts - it is okay when I am running but when I turn it hurts," he said. "But I still have 24 hours so we must wait and see."
